Diabetic Foot Care

Diabetic Foot Care
for Midland, Odessa, Pecos, Andrews, Big Spring, TX & the Surrounding Areas

Over 37 million Americans struggle with diabetes. Having too much glucose in your system for long periods of time can cause foot problems. If not controlled properly, diabetic neuropathy can develop. Without proper care, people with diabetes will lose the ability to feel heat, cold, or pain in their feet. Another common issue that can develop is peripheral vascular disease. This causes poor blood flow, which leads to recovery issues with healing sores and cuts. When an infection isn’t able to heal properly, there’s an increased risk of developing ulcers and gangrene.

At West Texas Foot & Ankle Associates, we specialize in diabetic foot care. No matter the issue, we will properly examine your feet and develop a comprehensive treatment plan. If you’re a diabetic with foot problems, it’s time to schedule an appointment with our podiatrist. In the meantime, check out the following section to learn some tips on how you can do diabetic foot care at home.

  • Perform daily checks for cuts, blisters, redness/swelling, and any problems with the toenails.
  • Wash your feet in lukewarm water, or the temperature in which you’d bathe an infant.
  • Wash them gently with a sponge or soft cloth and pat them dry, making sure to get between toes.
  • Keep your feet moisturized, but not between the toes as that could cause fungal infections.
  • Trim your toenails straight across and file down the edges if necessary.
  • Always seek medical treatment for corns and calluses.
  • Only wear clean, dry hosiery and change it daily. Think about diabetic socks, which have specific features for diabetics, and wear socks in bed if your feet get cold.
  • Check your shoes for pebbles and other objects before putting them on.
  • Make sure your feet are always warm and dry, using an antiperspirant if necessary.
  • Never, ever go barefoot, even at home!
  • Don’t use tobacco.
  • Schedule periodic checkups at West Texas Foot & Ankle for diabetic foot care.
