When Should You Schedule Hammertoe Treatment?

August 28, 2024

Scheduling Hammertoe Treatment

Hammertoe is a painful condition that’s caused by a muscle imbalance.  This imbalance puts pressure on the joints and tendons, which will cause them to get stuck in an upward position.  If you’re noticing symptoms like redness, swelling, or calluses on the top of the joint, you need to get this addressed as soon as possible!  This condition will not go away on its own, so it’s extremely important to visit a podiatrist right away and schedule treatment immediately.  At West Texas Foot & Ankle, we provide hammertoe treatment in Midland, Odessa, Pecos, Andrews, Big Spring, Monahans, TX, and surrounding areas.

What Does Hammertoe Treatment Involve?

If hammertoe is diagnosed early, it will most likely be able to be treated with non-surgical options.  Things like toe exercises and stretches, wearing orthopedic inserts, and getting more roomy shoes are some of the most common options.  Due to the painful nature of hammertoe, you might be prescribed medication as part of your treatment as well.  Anti-inflammatory medications will help to alleviate the pain and discomfort.  In extreme cases, if you’ve let your hammertoe condition go for too long or if the non-surgical options didn’t work, you might be looking at injections or surgery for your treatment.  Injections will help to reduce the pain and will probably need to be done regularly.  Surgery could involve removing a part of the bone, fusing the affected joint, or repositioning the tendon.

What Causes Hammertoe and How Do You Avoid It?

Hammertoe is caused by factors both within our control and out of our control.  For example, wearing shoes that don’t fit properly is a common cause of hammertoe.  This could be easily avoided by wearing more comfortable shoes that fit your feet properly.  On the other hand, other common causes are genetics and neuromuscular diseases, which we have little to no control over.  In these situations, it’s best to get any issues addressed and treated quickly to avoid any complications.
